Luis Suarez has apologized for his bite on Giorgio Chiellini and promises to never bite another player.
Suarez released the following statement:
"Independent from the fallout and the contradicting declarations that have surfaced during these past days, all of which have been without the intention of interfering with the good performance of my national team, the truth is that my colleague Giorgio Chiellini suffered the physical result of a bite in the collision he suffered with me. For this:
- I deeply regret what occurred.
- I apologize to Giorgio Chiellini and the entire football family.
- I vow to the public that there will never be another incident like (this)."
Suárez was suspended by FIFA for nine matches and four months.
Uruguay was eliminated in the knockout phase of the World Cup on Saturday by Colombia.
Joachim Löw will remain manager of Germany regardless of how his team performs in the knockout stages of the World Cup.
Low's contract runs through 2016.
"We still have the clear intention of carrying on with him," president Wolfgang Niersbach told Stern magazine. "There are no clauses in his contract which state that it depends on certain results.
"The way we have developed has been fantastic.
"Previously, we were getting recognition for our results while now we're getting a great degree of recognition for our style of play."
Neymar has a swollen thigh, which puts his status for Brazil's quarterfinals match against Colombia in question.
"We have four or five days to get Neymar in shape for the next match. It is a big problem, his thigh is swollen," said Luiz Felipe Scolari speaking after the game.
"I remember when I was Portugal coach and, in the fifth minute of the game, Netherlands defender Khalid Boulahrouz broke Cristiano Ronaldo in half and he had to go off 10 minutes later.
"When I saw Neymar after the game today I remembered that. Some people say Neymar falls too easily. He fell three times."
Belgium will likely need Eden Hazard to realize his potential in order to advance deep into the World Cup knockout stage.
"Eden wants to do more, he can bring us more," said Marc Wilmots.
"Everyone knows that. So now I'm just waiting to see it and I'm not trying to put any pressure on him. I would like him to be a leader on the pitch even if he is just 23."
Belgium has won its three matches by margins of just one goal.
"He can dictate the game, find the overlaps and score goals," Wilmots added.
"That's what he told me when we talked about it. But between saying and doing there is always a gap. And there is the opponent: will he leave you enough space?
"He was very dangerous against Algeria. I'm counting on him - and so is Belgium - but I think it's all together that we will find the solution."
Nigel de Jong will likely miss the Netherlands' quarterfinal match on Saturday against Costa Rica due to a groin strain.
"De Jong had a small groin strain and I was forced to substitute him," Louis van Gaal explained.
"I don't know if he will be available for the quarter-final, though to be honest it's very unlikely he will be able to play the next match.
"He is one of my most important players, so this is an enormous loss for us."
Vincent Kompany is doubtful for Tuesday's match between Belgium and the United States.
Kompany, captain of Belgium, has a recurring groin injury.
''We will do all within our powers to make sure he comes back at 100 percent,'' Marc Wilmots said Friday.
Wilmots considers him his ''right-hand man'' on the pitch.
Luis Suárez has claimed his bite of Giorgio Chiellini was accidental.
Suárez has been banned for nine matches and four months.
“After the impact … I lost my balance, making my body unstable and falling on top of my opponent,” he said in his submission to the panel. “At that moment I hit my face against the player, leaving a small bruise on my cheek and a strong pain in my teeth.”
FIFA studied the incident from 34 camera angles.
The bite was “deliberate, intentional and without provocation”, the ruling read. “He bit the player with the intention of wounding him or at least of destabilizing him.”
The most probable World Cup quarterfinalists in order of likelihood are Germany (87%), Argentina (76%), Brazil (73%), France (67%), Netherlands (64%), Greece (58%), Colombia (54%) and the United States (50%).
In terms of winning the World Cup, Brazil are still most likely to do so (23.4%), but Argentina (19.3%) and Germany’s chances (15.6%) are much closer than many believed prior to the start of the tournament. The Netherlands (10.5%) are fourth favorites with nearly double the chance of fifth favorites Colombia (5.4%).
There is just under a 70% chance that this year’s World Cup winners will come from Brazil, Argentina, Germany or the Netherlands.
The United States are hoping to have Jozy Altidore back from his hamstring injury for the knockout stage match against Belgium.
"We are very optimistic. Every day's a big step forward with Jozy," said Jurgen Klinsmann.
The United States don't have a similar option to Altidore as a reserve, so they have been playing with Clint Dempsey up front.
Altidore was spotted running during the United States' training session on Friday.
